More about Championship Clubs

EFL Championship | Overview

The EFL Championship (commonly known as the Championship) is the second-highest division of English football, sitting just below the Premier League. It is widely regarded as one of the most competitive football leagues in the world due to its unpredictable results, intense rivalries, and the huge prize of promotion to the Premier League.

Key Facts about the Championship

–  20+ Years of History: Established in 2004 (replacing the old First Division), the Championship has become a global stage for rising stars and historic clubs.

–  24 Teams Compete: Each season, 24 clubs play 46 matches (home and away), making it one of the most demanding football leagues in terms of fixtures.

Promotion & Relegation:

–  The top 2 teams at the end of the season earn automatic promotion to the Premier League.

–  Teams finishing 3rd–6th enter the play-offs, with the winner claiming the third promotion spot in a dramatic final at Wembley Stadium.

–  The bottom 3 clubs are relegated to League One.

–  Huge Prize Money: Promotion to the Premier League is often called the “richest game in football”, as the play-off final is worth around £170 million in broadcasting and sponsorship revenue.
