Program

Day 1:

Your tour will start with a flight to Budapest. On arrival in Budapest, meet your local guide and transfer to the 4* K&K Opera Hotel where you are booked for five-nights on a bed and breakfast basis.

The K&K Opera Hotel
The 4* K&K Opera Hotel is centrally located close to the Budapest Opera House and just 100m from the famous Andrássy Avenue and an approximate 450 metres from St.Stephen’s Basilica. Hotel facilities include restaurant, bar and fitness area. Rooms are air conditioned and offer satellite TV and tea and coffee facilities.

Day 2:

This morning, join your local guide for a guided city tour of the Pest Side of Budapest. Today’s tour also includes a visit to the Hungarian parliament, located on the river Danube and one of Budapest’s most famous landmarks. The story behind the building of this great structure is fascinating. The parliament was built between 1885 and 1902 along the Danube and was, for a time, the largest parliamentary building in the world. With 691 rooms and staircases stretching for more than 12 miles (20 kilometers), the building is topped by a dome that sits 226 feet (69 meters) high in the sky. Your forty-five minute guided tour will explore the buildings impressive interior, including the Session Room and the Great Vaulted Hall. Explore this monumental building as you learn about Hungary’s parliamentary policies. Please note that the parliament reserves the right to cancel and reschedule the visit should any official programme take precedence).
Afterwards, lunch will be served in one of Budapest’s local restaurants. After lunch, we return to the hotel with time to freshen up before once again meeting your local guide and fellow travellers for transfer to the MUPA Palace of the Arts for your first Wagner performance – Das Rheingold.
Wagner: Das Rheingold - A music drama in four scenes (German-language performance, with projected subtitles in Hungarian) featuring the Hungarian Radio Symphonic Orchestra and Choir.
18:00 Performance start time Duration: 3 hours
Coach transfer back to hotel at the end of the evening.

Day 3:

Today, you have the morning free for independent sightseeing or perhaps take the time to simply relax and unwind. Spend your free time enjoying the city sights, indulging in some shopping or enjoying famous Budapest Spas.

A pre-performance lunch will be served in one of Budapest’s local restaurants and afterwards coach to the MUPA Palace of the Arts for your second Wagner performance, Wagner’s Die Walküre.

16:00 performance start time

Wagner: Die Walküre - A music drama in three acts (German-language performance, with projected subtitles in Hungarian) featuring the Hungarian Radio Symphonic Orchestra and Choir.
Duration: 6 hours, with two breaks of 50 and 60 minutes each.
The second evening in the Ring of the Nibelung tetralogy will treat those present to the most popular of the four operas: Die Walküre captivates the listener with such deservedly beloved opera hits as Siegmund's Spring Song in Act 1 and, in Act 3, the Ride of the Valkyries, Wotan's Farewell and the Magic Fire Music. The plot unfolds with extraordinary power, drawing the audience into the passions of the characters with inexorable force. One thing is certain - no one could possibly be indifferent to the fate of the doomed lovers Siegmund and Sieglinde.
A snack and drink will be provided during the first break in the Palace of Arts' BOHÉM Restaurant.
22:00 Performance end time
Coach transfer back to hotel at the end of the evening.

Day 4:

This morning, contine to learn the history of Budapest as we tour the Buda side of the city visiting the Castle district and the Gellert Hill.
Afterwards, lunch will be served in one of Budapest’s local restaurants.

We then transfer to the Palace of the Arts for your third Wagner performance – Wagner: Siegfried, followed by post-performance dinner.

16:00 Performance start time
Wagner: Siegfried - A music drama in three acts (German-language performance, with projected subtitles in Hungarian) featuring the Hungarian Radio Symphonic Orchestra and Choir (choir director: Zoltán Pad)

Duration: 6 hours, with two breaks of 50 and 60 minutes each.
There's an old Hungarian expression: "It's better to fear than to become frightened." Siegfried, the hero from German mythology at the centre of Wagner's Ring, is famous for the fact that he does not know what fear is. A high-spirited son of the forest and a friend of the wild animals living in it, this strong young lad is not somebody one would want to tangle with. There are very few people around today who resemble him. Nevertheless, we are all Siegfrieds in a certain sense in that most of us have trouble discovering who we really are, and it is only as we travel down the path of life that we gradually learn what we are truly capable of.
A snack and drink will be provided during the first break in the Palace of Arts' BOHÉM Restaurant.
22:00 Performance end time
Coach transfer back to hotel at the end of the evening.

Day 5:

This morning, discover Hungary's history as you take a guided tour of Szentendre, known for its museums, galleries and artists. Here, your guide will lead you on a walk through the town and you will then have some free time to shop for arts and crafts.

An early three-course lunch will be served at Schieszl Restaurant. After lunch, we transfer back to the hotel to freshen up and departure to the Palace of the Arts for your final Wagner performance – Götterdämmerung

16:00 Performance start time
Götterdämmerung - A music drama in three acts (German-language performance, with projected subtitles in Hungarian) with the Hungarian Radio Choir (chorus master: Zoltán Pad) and Budapest Studio Choir (chorus master: Kálmán Strausz)

Duration: 6 hours, with two breaks of 50 and 60 minutes each.

In spite of the destruction of the world that is about to ensue, the notes ringing out from the orchestra pit at the very end of the final music drama in the Ring of the Nibelung are ones of hope, for the end holds forth the possibility of a new beginning. This is because the final sounds come from the strings playing the broad lyrical notes of the transfigurative Redemption motif. There can hardly be imagined in our time a work that conveys a more important message to humanity, as it debates the possible fate of the earth, about threats to the natural environment than Götterdämmerung does. Perhaps there is still time for us to return the ring to the Rhinemaidens.

A snack and drink will be provided during the first break in the Palace of Arts' BOHÉM Restaurant.
22:00 Performance end time
Coach transfer back to hotel at the end of the evening.
