Stay three-nights in cultural Leipzig and immerse yourself in Germany’s rich cultural and music history. The city of Leipzig was home to many great composers who combined established its reputation as a city of music. This tour offers the opportunity to enjoy “Il Trovatore” in the Leipzig Opera house and the “Christmas Oratorio” in St. Thomas Church over three nights. During our stay, we explore one of Germany’s most musical cities. See the city sights and hear all about the history of Leipzig on a guided city tour and visit the Bach-Museum where we have a stop for lunch and short cembalo concert. In your free time, enjoy the many museums on offer, do some shopping or simply relax and enjoy a coffee at one of Leipzig’s many cafés.
I praise my Leipzig...!" is Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s famous quote about the ancient and vibrant Saxon city he described as his Little Paris. Bursting with fresh confidence and vitality, lovely Leipzig offers a myriad of things to see and do. Marvel at its Renaissance and Baroque buildings and take time to visit the city’s many museums. Johann Sebastian Bach was Leipzig's musical director – director ‘musices lipsiensis’ – and choirmaster of the St Thomas' Boys Choir between 1723 and 1750 and the city has dedicated itself to maintaining Bach's heritage with the Bach Archives, the Bach Museum, the St Thomas' Boys Choir, and the Gewandhaus Orchestra.
Your flight with Aer Lingus departs Dublin airport at 06:50 and arrives Berlin airport 10:10. It is housed in the historic Brühlpelz building and offers elegant studios and apartments. The Alto Restaurant and Bar serves a buffet breakfast as well as lunch and dinner options.
There will be a welcome lunch in the hotel on arrival.
The remainder of the day is at your leisure.
This morning, we take a stroll through Leipzig’s stunning city centre. See the Market Square place with the Old City Hall, St Thomas Church, the Mädler Passage containing the legendary restaurant Auerbachs Keller tavern, Specks Hof arcade and St. Nicholas’s Church. Each place will help you discover more about the diverse traditions, personalities and history of Leipzig.
We stop for an early lunch in the Café Gloria in the Bach-Museum and afterwards enjoy a guided Tour through Bach-Museum with a short cembalo concert (approx. 30 minutes).
As part of the tour, you can date a Bach manuscript yourself. Arrange the instrumental parts of a Bach hymn to your taste and experience the sound of Baroque instruments! Over 750 m2, the life and works of Johann Sebastian Bach and his family are presented in an interactive multi-media exhibition. One of the highlights of the museum is the treasure chamber, which holds original Bach manuscripts and other precious objects. Among the special exhibits, the organ console of an instrument is presented which was examined by Bach himself in 1743 from the former Johanniskirche church, a casket with relics from Bach’s tomb and a cash box, which was recently discovered among the property of the Bach family.
We then return on foot to the hotel with a little time to relax before an early dinner after which you will again meet your guide and walk the short distance to the opera house for the evening performance (circa 450m).
19:30 Start time for “Il Trovatore” in the Opera House
After the opera performance, your guide will escort you back to the hotel.
Today, a short coach tour will seek to give you an overall impression of the city. Today’s tour will take you to the new Leipzig Fair Exhibition Centre, the exquisite Gohlis Palace, Schiller House and through the Waldstrasse district to the former Supreme Court, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations where you will have a guided tour, the Russian Church and Augustusplatz, the largest square in the city centre, which accommodates the University of Leipzig, Opera House and the Gewandhaus concert hall.
After the city tour, you will have free time lunch and for an independent visit to the Leipzig Christmas Market. The Leipzig Christmas Market tradition dates back to 1458 meaning it is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. With its unique cultural and culinary attractions in the middle of the fascinating historical backdrop of the city centre and its 300 stands, it is one of the largest and most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany.
In the late afternoon, you will meet again with your guide who will escort you to St. Thomas Church (ca. 700m) for the “Christmas Oratorio”concert.
Today’s highlight is performance of the Christmas oratorio with the St. Thomas Choir and the Gewandhaus Orchestra.
The series of six cantatas was written with the view of being used once in a performance at the St. Thomas Church during the Christmas period of 1734/35. The piece was first performed again in 1857, and, has since developed into a traditional choral piece performed during the Christmas season. 17:00 Start time for the “Christmas Oratorio” in St. Thomas Church (cantatas I – VI). For 27 years, from 1723 to 1750, Johann Sebastian Bach worked as the Church Choirmaster. During this time, he led the St. Thomas Choir, which still enjoys international fame to this day. And indeed, most of Bach's works were written here. The St. Thomas Church is also known as Bach's final resting place and is regarded as an important centre of classical music - reaching far beyond the borders of Germany. At the end of the concert (ca. 19:30), your local guide will escort back to the hotel where the day will end with an evening dinner in the hotel restaurant.
